
Jamaican churches have begun speaking about climate change as a practical concern, not just a theological one, after the devastation of a recent Category 5 storm.
Churches as emergency shelters
On October 28 2025, Hurricane Melissa tore through western Jamaica, damaging homes, businesses and places of worship. Faith groups quickly filled gaps left by official responders.
In Westmoreland, the Baulk Wesleyan Holiness Church opened its doors to displaced families even though it was not designated as a government shelter. In St Elizabeth, congregations coordinated food, medical aid and home-repair assistance.
These actions highlighted that church properties include halls, kitchens, parking lots and open fields, all of which can serve as critical emergency infrastructure during disasters.
Push for resilient construction
“Jamaica has thousands of church buildings sitting in almost every type of environment imaginable, from coastal communities to hillsides and flood-prone districts,” Dean Jones, director of Jamaica Homes, said.
By June 2026, 158 churches in St Elizabeth and Hanover had received J$26.13 million through the government’s Community Church Clean-up and Restoration Initiative. A total of 420 churches across five parishes were assessed for aid, while the program’s overall budget stood at J$75 million.
Religious leaders argue that stewardship should extend to the physical estate, urging upgrades such as hurricane straps, improved roof connections, rainwater harvesting, solar power, better drainage and natural ventilation.
“Green construction cannot simply mean putting solar panels on the roof and taking a photograph,” Jones explained. “Resilience is about orientation, drainage, roof design, materials, energy, water, maintenance and understanding the risks surrounding the land itself.”
Compared with rebuilding after earlier storms, the current focus on durable design mirrors a shift seen in other sectors: when structures are repeatedly repaired, long-term costs rise sharply, making upfront investment in resilience economically sensible.
Anglican clergyman Howard Gregory noted that many congregations struggle to maintain adequate insurance, prompting some to join pooled arrangements as traditional coverage becomes financially untenable.

Repeated damage to poorly built roofs and inadequate drainage not only threatens individual faith groups but also drives up premiums across the broader property market, linking insurance pricing directly to construction quality.
After Melissa, United Church congregations acted as collection points for humanitarian supplies in Kingston, St Andrew and Portmore before aid moved to the hardest-hit areas.
Larger denominations are now beginning to audit their buildings for flood, wind and heat risks, a step that could lay the groundwork for future community resilience hubs.
Building-code considerations
The idea that stewardship extends to structural safety is prompting discussions about formal building standards. Religious bodies are urging policymakers to embed climate-resilient features in the national code, such as mandatory wind-bracing and drainage requirements for community facilities.
Officials acknowledge that current regulations do not fully address the unique risks faced by congregational properties. Proposals include incentives for retrofitting roofs, installing rain-capture systems and adopting passive-ventilation designs. These measures aim to reduce the frequency of costly repairs and to lower long-term insurance premiums across the market.
Churches as preparedness hubs
Community organizers are leveraging church facilities to host practical training on hurricane readiness.
These gatherings also provide a venue for sharing low-cost, locally sourced building techniques that improve structural durability. By showcasing successful retrofits, congregations encourage neighbors to adopt similar upgrades.
Some denominations are experimenting with solar-powered micro-grids within their campuses. Such installations can supply electricity, water purification and communication services when municipal utilities fail, turning worship spaces into reliable shelters.
Ultimately, the focus returns to the physical condition of each building. Regular inspections of roofs, drainage and structural connections become a shared responsibility, ensuring that places of worship continue to serve both spiritual and practical needs when the next storm arrives.
